On March 29, 2016, the School Board of Volusia County adopted a student appearance, dress and uniform code for all elementary, middle and high school students for the 2016-2017 school year.

1. A polo or button-down Oxford shirt in any solid color, or a University High School athletic, club, academic or event tee shirt are permissible any school day.
• Students MUST wear lower garments that meet uniform policy requirements*.
Pants, shorts, capris, skirts, skorts, and jumpers must be a solid color with no holes, no rips, no tears, no stripes, decorations or embroidery. Leggings are not acceptable lower garments.
• Hoodies/Jackets may be worn, but a shirt, meeting uniform policy requirements must be worn beneath the hoodie/jacket. Hoods, hats or head coverings MUST be removed when in doors.

2. All official club, sports, program, or academy shirts are permissible any school day.
• Official club, sports, program, or academy shirts must be approved by Principal or designee.
• Students MUST wear lower garments that meet uniform policy requirements*.

3. Sports teams (including cheerleaders) will be permitted to wear team uniform jerseys or tops on game days.

4. Students participating in Army JROTC will be permitted to wear their Army JROTC uniform on Wednesdays as well on days with special events.


5. STEM Biomedical Academy students are permitted to wear academy scrubs on Thursdays.


6. All students MUST wear their school issued student ID and lanyard at all times while on campus.


? Lower Garment Policy - Pants, shorts, capris, skirts, skorts and jumpers must be a solid color with no holes, no rips, no tears, no stripes, decorations or embroidery. Black and blue denim are acceptable. Leggings are not acceptable. Lower garments must be worn at the waist and will not have rips or tears. Please be mindful that any shorts, skirts or skorts must be mid-thigh or below in length.

Other Important Things to Know:

· Shoes—closed toe and heel; high school students may also wear sandals.
· Clothing must be of a length and fit that are suitable to the build and stature of the student.
· Shirts must be long enough to clearly overlap the beltline or stay tucked in.
· Lower garments with visible belt loops must be worn with a belt, exceptions will be allowed for students in K-5.
· The waistband must be worn and secured between the hips and waist.
· Jumpers, skirts and shorts must be at least mid-thigh or below in length.
· Clothing must not be see-through or have tears.
· Hats and sunglasses may not be worn inside an enclosed school building.


Where to Purchase Uniforms

You may already have clothes that can serve as school uniforms or you can buy them from any retail store, discount store, consignment shop, uniform company or catalog. As long as the clothing meets the requirements, it doesn’t matter where you get it.
Consideration for Financial Hardships

Each principal and/or school advisory council may develop procedures to inform students and parents of assistance and/or donation opportunities.
     

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of material is acceptable for shorts, pants, skirts, capris, skorts, and jumpers?
The policy does not specify fabric for bottoms. They can be any material in tan, navy blue or black. Blue and black denim is also permissible for all bottoms. The fit must be suitable for build/stature of student and there can be no rips or tears.  Shorts, skirts, skorts and jumpers must be mid-thigh or below in length. Return to Top
What type of material is acceptable for shirts?
Shirts must be polo-style or oxford-style and can be long- or short-sleeved. There are many options available, including dri-fit, blended cotton, 100% cotton, Pique and jersey knit. Return to Top
Can shirts or bottoms be “bedazzled”?
No, the policy states clothing must not have colored trim, stripes, decorations or embroidery; however, a small logo is acceptable. Return to Top
Can a polo shirt have a pocket?
Yes, as long as it meets the color requirement for your school. Return to Top

Can sweatshirts and hoodies be worn?
Yes, but if the garment has a hood, it must be removed from the head while in school buildings.  There are no color requirements for outerwear, but they must meet the general dress code (nothing offensive, suggestive, disruptive or indecent). Return to Top
Is a polo dress acceptable?
Yes; however, it must meet the color requirement for approved shirts and be mid-thigh or longer. Return to Top
Can athletes wear team shirts on game days?
Yes, with principal approval (Section III. C. 3.) Return to Top
What kind of shoes are permissible?
Elementary and middle school students must wear a shoe with a closed toe and closed heel, which includes boots. Athletic shoes must be worn for PE.  In addition to closed toe shoes, high school students may wear sandals. Return to Top
Can colored socks and shoelaces be worn?
Yes, there are no restrictions on the color of socks, shoelaces, belts or accessories; however, they must meet the general dress code requirements (cannot be unsafe, offensive, suggestive, disruptive or indecent). Return to Top
Do shirts have to be tucked in?
No, shirts are not required to be tucked in; however, if belt loops are visible a belt must be worn.  Elementary students are not required to wear belts. Return to Top
